1. Interesting Info About BSE: or Mad Cows Disease- Why it Had to Happen in the US... ...and why you should not worry too much about it. BSE is on everyone's mind now that the first case of BSE has been registered in the US. Has the disease finally made the jump across the big pond from Europe? Will the US have to slaughter millions of cows like Great Britain has? British farmer Mark Purdey many years ago refused to treat his cows with organophosphates (pesticides) against the warble fly. Later he noticed that the cows of farmers who like him had not used organophosphates did not come down with BSE. He started to do his own research and came upon astonishing facts. He found that excessive manganese was causing BSE when copper metabolism was blocked, for example by organophosphates. Is he just another nut who does not know what he is talking about?? Apparently not, the University of Oxford confirmed his findings: in the lab they could show that excess manganese and lack of copper could turn regular proteins into prions, which are the cause of BSE. Much rather than a communicable disease, this seems to be just a case of toxicity. Brains of people who died of CJD, the human analogue of BSE, contained 10 times the normal amounts of manganese. Could there be a connection to Parkinsons Disease?Read the details here: http://www.purdeyenvironment.com/. 2. The Daily Dose - Epilepsy At the recent American Epilepsy Society meeting in Boston, ateam of researchers from the Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore revealed some stunning new research which strongly suggests that the Atkins diet (or other popular variations on the low-carb/high protein theme) eliminates epileptic seizures in some children. In fact, their research showed that after just four months on the diet, 50% of the test's subjects were SEIZURE- FREE - and remained that way for nearly 2 years! The study's authors conducted the research after noticing that the modern low-carb diet used by millions of Americans to lose weight and boost their heart health was similar to the ultra-specific "ketogenic" diet many medication-averse epileptic children have for years used for minimizing the incidence of seizures. However, since the Atkins-type nutritional approach is much simpler to implement (since it doesn't involve fasting like the ketogenic plan) and maintain, it's much easier for kids and adolescents to adhere to over the long term. The Hopkins-based researchers consider these finding sencouraging because they may offer children who for one reason or another can't take modern epilepsy drugs a viable alternative for controlling seizures. To start receiving your own copy of the Daily Dose, visit:http://www.realhealthnews.com/dailydose/freecopy.html William Campbell Douglass II, MD
3 New England Journal of Medicine Hammers Chemo, Applauds Alternative Cancer TherapyConsumer Advocate Tim Bolen wrote in his article on December 26th, 2002-"Times are a-changin' in the US Health community. Who would have believed that the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine would APPLAUD an Alternative Cancer Therapy, and in the same article, BLAST chemotherapy, as worthless. Well, it happened... in the December 12th, 2002 issue, in a review by James Spencer Malpas, M.D., D.Phil. St. Bartholomew's Hospital London EC1A 7BE, United Kingdom You can find the article in the Journal at http://content.NEJM.org/cgi/content/full/347/24/1986, if you're willing to fork over the ten dollars(US).For those of you that don't want to spend the ten dollars, here are the quotes...Quote #1 - "He found the evidence in favor of conventional treatment unconvincing and opted for such alternative therapies as Gerson therapy with its strict diet, vitamins, and enemas. High-dose vitamin C and high-dose vitamin D, both contraindicated in the orthodox treatment of multiple myeloma, were later added to the regimen. What is evident is that this was the right therapy for him."Quote #2 - "The irony of the whole situation is that a recent randomized trial of treatment for stage 1 multiple myeloma by Riccardi and colleagues (British Journal of Cancer 2000;82:1254-60) showed no advantage of conventional chemotherapy over no treatment."Well, well... That ought to escalate the "quackbuster's" demise... Even the New England Journal has turned their back on their ludicrous assertions....
